Of course, a sizable portion of you reading this will never have even owned a film camera - so will never have had to decide in advance what type of film to carry for a particular job, decide what ASA or ISO to choose and why and so many other things in the strange world of film. Imagine having to drop your work off and wait for it for a week - then pay to get it back, before you can find out what you took!

The move away from film for the majority will see so many tricks of the trade fade to memory. For example, one of my trusty ones was to tear the first portion of the leader off the film when it was used so that I never mistook used rolls for unused ones when changing them in a hurry.

Now, however we are faced with the dilemma of what to do with all these images we shoot. We arrive home and load them up into the computer. First choice: what sort of computer? Well, for me a Mac is the only choice. Once you have used one, you will realise just how much better than Windows-based machines they really are.

OK, got the computer. Now what software should you use? Well, Apple people have the excellent Aperture and that is my preference. Adobe's Lightroom works on either platform and is very similar. Both allow you to build libraries of your images and to carry out 90% of the adjustments you will usually want to make to exposure, sharpening, image repair and so on.

Both programs also open and display RAW files for most cameras. This removes a separate step which used to be common when using this type of file. Your end use will determine whether you shoot RAW or JPEG: I recommend RAW personally. Mac's operating system OSX will open RAW files by itself, unlike most versions of Windows.

Next you will need protected storage for your libraries to ensure that your valuable and irreplaceable work does not vanish forever when your computer dies or some other event occurs. One of the easiest is Drobo, a plug and play storage unit that uses standard HDD's and fully automates the process of protecting your data. The basic unit uses up to 4 drives (minimum is 2) of any capacity. There are versions that take more drives if needed.

I am a rare breed - a pro photographer who neither owns nor uses Photoshop. Simply put, I find it counter-intuitive and to have an appalling GUI that simply requires the user to learn too much geek stuff to use it properly. Compare PS to anything designed by Apple and you will see what I mean: you will understand at least the basic functionality of an Apple program in 10 minutes - I challenge anyone to achieve that with PS!

My alternative to PS is Nik Software's excellent suite of Aperture plug-ins. These various programs take the image from Aperture and allow you to (depending on the one you are using) remove noise, selectively add light, colour, structure and so on, add a range of adjustable filter effects such as Pro Contrast, Graduated ND, Soft Focus and so on and finally to sharpen the image in quite sophisticated ways. Of course sometimes I need a proper application of PS to remove someone from a shot or otherwise manipulate it so I outsource that to a specialist so I can use my time elsewhere.

So my workflow is shoot, download into Apple Aperture, back up images to my internal drives and the Drobo external drive, sort, keyword and classify images in Aperture, process the selects in Aperture and with Nik plug-ins and export to client/printer/web/disk as needed.

Keep things simple, use the software and hardware that fits in with the way you want to work - rather than change your ways to fit the software/hardware designer's ideas! Also, never be afraid to be different: creativity is individual and so are the choices you make to produce it.

Using Blur

The images that do work best are the ones that have a dreamy feel. Consequently, it is important to choose the subject matter carefully. Consequently, the more carefully the subject matter is selected, the better the final results.

There are numerous approaches to this technique. Perhaps the simplest way is to use a soft focus lens. However, this is also the costliest method. A soft focus filter is another way to undertake this technique. This filter can be attached to a regular lens. An inexpensive approach is to just stretch panty hose over the front of a lens. Of course, the blur can always be added in the course of image editing with Photoshop (or some other editing software).

Zooming In

The zooming in technique produces a very interesting effect. However, it does require a zoom lens. The technique is fairly easy. A long shutter speed is chosen. A tripod is definitely required for this technique. The tripod prevents camera movement from blurring the image (we want blur by zooming -- not by camera motion). A strong center of interest is necessary. For those images that don't have a strong center of interest, the image generally seems to be simply a group of blurry lines. Keeping these points in mind can help to enhance your abstract images.

Trial and error is part of this technique. Many images will, probably, be taken to create one beautiful photo. This is just part of the procedure.

Using a Partial Object

This technique does not photograph an entire object. Rather, the photographer isolates just a section of an object. Then, that section is photographed. The best thing to do is to isolate a part of an object that is especially interesting. By using only a section of the object, some mystique is created.

Objects need to be chosen that have strong form, color, and lines. These kinds of objects will produce superior abstract images.

Photoshop Filters

Instead of creating abstract images at the time that an image is shot, Photoshop can be utilized to create the abstract. The filters in Photoshop are a great way to do this. Simply use the Filter menu to access the filters. The best way to create a great abstract image, with this technique, is to simply play with the various filter choices.
